Peshawar school roof collapse kills at least 35 people

A structural collapse at the Al-Khair School System in the Dir Colony area of Peshawar, Pakistan, has resulted in the deaths of at least 34 to 35 people, including 32 to 34 students and one female teacher. Most of the victims were children aged between 6 and 14 years old. Dozens of others, with reports citing between 19 and over 50 injuries, were treated at Lady Reading Hospital, where an emergency was declared.

The incident occurred when a roof from an upper level collapsed onto a classroom below, trapping students inside. Rescue operations involving approximately 100 personnel and 16 ambulances were deployed to clear the rubble. Authorities have arrested Mohammad Khan, the owner of the school, following the tragedy. Peshawar Police Chief Saeed Ahmed noted the building was structurally weak, while the owner suggested recent heavy rains may have contributed to the instability.

In response, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial government has ordered immediate safety inspections of schools across the region. Technical teams have been tasked with assessing roofs, walls, and staircases to classify buildings as safe, requiring repairs, or potentially unsafe. This tragedy has renewed concerns regarding construction standards and the use of substandard materials in Pakistan.
