Pet safety and seasonal trends for dogs and cats

As seasonal festivities approach, animal welfare experts are providing guidance on pet safety during large public events and holidays like Halloween. For large gatherings such as the Circleville Pumpkin Show, experts warn of risks including disease transmission from unvaccinated animals, ingestion of discarded human food, and stress caused by loud noises and crowds.

Regarding Halloween, organizations like PETA and Four Paws advise pet owners to keep chocolate, candies, and certain decorations—such as corn cobs or artificial spider webs—out of reach to prevent choking or poisoning. When using costumes, the Animal Rescue League of Iowa recommends ensuring they do not restrict breathing, vision, or hearing, noting that heavy panting or difficulty walking can indicate significant stress.

In contrast to these safety warnings, some seasonal trends focus on pet-friendly celebrations. Guilford County Animal Services is hosting a ‘Howl-O-Ween’ event in Greensboro featuring costume contests and pet-safe treats. Additionally, a ‘Pumpkin Spiced Dog Latte’ trend has emerged, utilizing dog-safe ingredients like pumpkin puree, coconut milk, and pumpkin seeds to provide nutrients such as magnesium and potassium without the caffeine or sugar found in human versions.
