Pet safety and seasonal lifestyle trends

Overview

As seasonal festivities like Halloween approach, animal welfare experts are highlighting various risks to pets. Guidance emphasizes the dangers of disease transmission, ingestion of toxic human foods like chocolate, and the hazards of certain decorations such as corn cobs or artificial spider webs. Veterinary professionals have specifically warned against the ingestion of toxic substances, noting that chocolate contains theobromine and methylxanthines, while sugar-free gums containing xylitol can be extremely dangerous. In Australia, RSPCA Pet Insurance reported a 36.4 percent increase in poisoning and toxicity claims over the past year. Beyond dietary risks, experts warn that human costumes and large yard decorations can cause significant anxiety, confusion, and fear in dogs and cats. Because pets rely on scent, posture, and facial expressions to identify owners, masks, capes, or changes in gait can trigger defensive behaviors like hiding, barking, or hissing. To mitigate these risks, the Ottawa Humane Society and other organizations advise against using costumes, noting they can cause stress, skin irritation, or physical injury, suggesting themed collars or bandanas as safer alternatives. Economic and lifestyle trends reflect the season’s impact. While the National Retail Federation predicts consumers will spend approximately $920 million on pet costumes in 2026, some families in the UK are turning to costume swaps, second-hand shops, and homemade creations to manage costs. Regional celebrations for 2026 include community trick-or-treating in South Boston and festivals in Philadelphia, which features a dog costume contest. In Los Angeles, families can attend themed sporting events, such as trunk-or-treat celebrations hosted by the LA Kings and the Lakers vs. Clippers. In Bahrain, festivities include themed brunches and beach nights. Additionally, Westfield, New Jersey, has received local recognition, with East Dudley Avenue being named America’s “Trick-or-Treatiest Street” by Reese’s.
