Peter Bon Jallah rape trial proceeds after judge rejects acquittal motion

The rape and kidnapping trial of former National Security Agency operative Peter Bon Jallah has moved into a critical phase after Judge Wesseh Alphonsus Wesseh Sr. denied a motion for acquittal.

Jallah, 63, faces charges of gang rape, statutory rape, and kidnapping involving a 16-year-old male. The defense had argued for an immediate acquittal, claiming that a crime-scene inspection revealed discrepancies between the alleged victim's testimony and the physical reality of the residence. Specifically, the defense noted that the bedroom lacked the size, raised bed, and internal bathroom described by the victim.

However, the court ruled that the prosecution's evidence—which includes testimony from 12 witnesses, including medical personnel and a forensic expert—is not “wholly insufficient” to terminate the case. The judge determined that ending the trial at this stage would be premature, as the prosecution has reserved the right to present rebuttal witnesses. Jallah, who has denied all allegations and opted for a bench trial, is now expected to take the witness stand.
