Godswill Akpabio seeks 2027 Senate re-election amid political tensions

Nigerian political activity has intensified ahead of the 2027 general elections. Senate President Godswill Akpabio has appealed to President Bola Tinubu for support to retain his leadership position in the 11th Senate. During a plenary session, Senate Chief Whip Mohammed Monguno and other lawmakers declared that the Senate presidency is not open for contest, asserting that Akpabio has already secured the seat.

Akpabio also issued a warning to state governors against pursuing other political offices before completing their current mandates, a move interpreted as targeting Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma. Additionally, Akpabio defended remarks made during a debate on the Suicide Prevention Bill 2026, denying that his comments regarding the afterlife were intended to disparage Islam. He cited his history of sponsoring thousands of Muslim and Christian pilgrims as evidence of his respect for religious groups.

In response to the suicide bill debate, the Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria (APN) demanded an apology, arguing that Akpabio’s comments could stigmatize mental health struggles. Meanwhile, opposition dynamics are shifting; APGA Chairman Sly Ezeokenwa claimed there is no pathway for Peter Obi to win in 2027, while the ADC-PCC accused Rabiu Kwankwaso of undermining opposition unity by calling for Atiku Abubakar to step down for Obi.
