Nigerian Senate President political and legislative activity

Overview

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has been active in both political maneuvering and legislative oversight. Ahead of the 2027 general elections, Akpabio sought support from President Bola Tinubu to retain his leadership position in the Senate, receiving declarations of support from some lawmakers. During this period, he also faced criticism from the Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria regarding comments made during a debate on the Suicide Prevention Bill 2026.

In a separate legislative focus, Akpabio addressed the petroleum industry, calling for accountability regarding the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA). He urged stakeholders to move beyond the establishment of institutions and instead deliver measurable economic results, specifically citing investor confidence, petroleum production levels, and the development of oil-producing communities as key metrics for success.
