Peter Obi sparks controversy over diaspora remittance comments
Peter Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate for 2027, has drawn significant criticism following remarks made during a town hall meeting in Manchester, United Kingdom. Obi urged Nigerians living in the diaspora to reconsider sending financial assistance to relatives in Nigeria, suggesting that such remittances provide only temporary relief and fail to address the structural economic issues caused by poor leadership.
Obi stated, “You have people at home in Nigeria today who are begging you for money. Tell them no!” He argued that diaspora members should instead use their influence to encourage relatives to vote for productive leaders who can create economic opportunities, such as jobs and affordable healthcare.
In response to backlash, Obi’s media office clarified that he did not intend for Nigerians to abandon their families. They emphasized that his message was about building a nation where citizens do not have to rely on overseas relatives for basic survival. However, the Presidency and various political parties, including the Labour Party, criticized the stance. Opponents argued the advice could worsen hardship for vulnerable families who depend on remittances for medical bills, rent, and education.
