Petřín funicular reopens in Prague after major reconstruction
The Petřín funicular in Prague has resumed operations following a nearly two-year hiatus caused by extreme rainfall that damaged the track and slope in September 2024. The reconstruction included a complete overhaul of the trackbed, replacement of rails, and modernization of cable technology.
The service features new fourth-generation unmanned vehicles designed by Anna Marešová and manufactured by the Doppelmayr/Garaventa Group. These vehicles offer larger glass surfaces to provide passengers with improved views of the city. The Újezd station has also undergone design changes by artist Michal Škapou.
During the first nine hours of trial operation, more than 6,000 passengers used the service. While staff are currently present to oversee the launch, the Prague Public Transit Company plans to phase out attendants, moving toward fully unmanned operation within approximately six months. The funicular operates daily from 07:00 to 22:15 with ten-minute intervals. A single ride costs 100 CZK, or 90 CZK when purchased via the PID Lítačka app, while holders of long-term Prague transit passes can use it at no additional cost.
