Prague Petřín funicular reconstruction and reopening

Overview

The Petřín funicular in Prague has officially reopened following a nearly two-year reconstruction project. The hiatus was caused by extreme rainfall in September 2024, which damaged the track and slope. The renovation involved a complete overhaul of the trackbed, rail replacement, modernization of cable technology, and anchoring the track into rock using 20-meter pilots. The reconstruction of the track cost approximately 134 million CZK (excluding VAT).

The service features new fourth-generation unmanned carriages manufactured by the Doppelmayr/Garaventa group and designed by Anna Marešová. These cabins hold 120 passengers and feature expanded glass surfaces and roofs for improved city views. An interactive design element allows the cabins' lights to signal each other when passing; specifically, when two cars pass, one flashes its headlight at the other, causing the second car's interior to glow red.

Additionally, the Újezd station has undergone design changes by artist Michal Škapou. Trial operations began in late September 2026, with more than 6,000 passengers using the service during the first nine hours of operation. During its first weekend of service, the funicular experienced high demand, resulting in long queues of visitors. While staff are currently present to oversee the launch, the Prague Public Transport Company (DPP) plans to transition to fully unmanned operation within approximately six months. The funicular operates daily from 07:00 to 22:15 at ten-minute intervals.

Ticket pricing for a single ride is 100 CZK for paper tickets or 90 CZK via the PID Lítačka app. Long-term transit passes remain valid, and children under 15 and seniors over 65 continue to ride for free.

As part of the infrastructure updates, a 509-meter composite maintenance and evacuation staircase provided by MEA has been installed. This structure was selected for its high strength, low weight, and resistance to corrosion.
