Petralona apartment block collapse kills four, authorities probe building violations

A four‑storey apartment building on Alkmini Street in the Petralona neighbourhood of Athens collapsed, leaving four residents dead and several others missing. Residents reported a growing tilt of the structure—first 5 % and then 15 %—and loud cracking noises before the building fell like a “paper tower.”

Rescue teams from EMAK, the fire service and police arrived quickly, using a trained dog to search the debris. By early afternoon the search was called off after confirming that four people were unaccounted for, and families were notified.

Investigations revealed that nearby excavation work for a new five‑storey building may have weakened the old structure’s foundations. Authorities say low‑quality “rapid‑setting” cement was used and a drainage leak may have eroded the soil. The landowner, three engineers and a company shareholder were arrested on charges of violating building regulations. Witnesses recalled a mechanic’s comment, “Η Πίζα γέρνει αλλά δεν πέφτει” (“the Pisa leans but doesn’t fall”), made moments before the collapse.

The incident has prompted a broader review of construction practices and safety oversight in Greece.
