Petralona building collapse in Athens linked to underground parking excavation

A multi‑storey residential building in the Petralona neighbourhood of Athens collapsed, leaving residents sleeping in their cars and prompting emergency assistance. Investigations revealed that a contract signed on 5 February 2026 authorized excavation for an underground parking garage adjacent to the structure. The plan called for six parking spaces—three at ground level and three below—each covering about 10–12 m². Authorities suspect that digging deeper than the building’s foundations may have contributed to the failure of the older 1970‑era construction, which had already been partially demolished.

The two architects‑engineers involved in the excavation confirmed the demolition of the previous house and assert they received no prior warnings about structural risks. Police have detained the parties responsible for the excavation, and the incident has intensified scrutiny of illegal or unsafe construction practices in the area.
