Petralona building collapse leaves residents awaiting state assistance

On 30 June, a four‑storey residential block on Alkminas street in the Petralona neighbourhood of Athens collapsed after demolition and excavation work on an adjacent lot. No residents were injured; the seven apartments were empty at the time. Rescue teams from fire services and the Special Anti‑Terrorist Unit, aided by search dogs, cleared the rubble and confirmed that there were no missing persons.

The municipal council approved a one‑off grant of €3,000 for each of the affected families, while the central government has yet to announce a comprehensive support plan. Prosecutors have summoned five individuals – the contractor, the lot owners and three engineers – for potential violations of building regulations and safety standards. Investigations continue to determine the exact cause of the collapse and whether additional structural risks exist in a neighbouring block that was also evacuated for safety checks.
