Petralona building collapse leaves residents in limbo as debris removal stalls

Eleven days after a multi‑storey block in the Petralona neighbourhood of Athens collapsed on 30 June, residents remain in a state of uncertainty. The demolition debris has not yet been cleared, preventing forensic experts appointed by the prosecutor from beginning their investigation into the causes of the tragedy.

Local inhabitants complain that no concrete action has been taken, describing the site as a "hell" and saying they have been forced to guard their remaining possessions amid the wreckage. The deputy mayor for technical services of the Athens municipality, Panagiotis Charlautis, said the responsibility for removing the rubble does not lie with the public authorities but with the party that will be found liable once the criminal investigation is concluded.

The prosecutor handling the case has called an emergency meeting to accelerate decisions on responsibility and to address public‑health concerns, urging immediate cleanup of the area.
