Petralona building collapse triggers extended safety inspections

A multi‑storey residential block on Alkmenis Street in the Petralona district of Athens collapsed, leaving seven families homeless and their belongings buried in debris. Five days after the incident, police continue to cordon off the site and have ordered the evacuation of a neighboring building as technical teams assess its structural integrity.

Investigations by authorities are ongoing to determine whether building permits and construction standards were met. Engineers are conducting detailed checks on the fallen tower and an adjacent structure, while residents await official assurances, compensation timelines and permission to return to their homes.

Disaster‑management expert Kostas Synolakis warned that Greece must address structural safety in aging apartment blocks, noting that energy‑renovation programmes should be paired with seismic and load‑bearing upgrades to prevent similar failures.
