Petrobras reduces carbon intensity of sustainable aviation fuel
Petrobras has achieved a significant reduction in the carbon intensity of its sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) produced at the Duque de Caxias Refinery (Reduc) in Rio de Janeiro. Following an international audit and the renewal of its ISCC CORSIA certification in early October, the company reported a 23.8% decrease in the carbon intensity of the final SAF product derived from corn oil.
The improvement is attributed to enhanced management of hydrogen used during the production process. By utilizing hydrogen from catalytic naphtha reforming—a lower-impact source—the company reduced the carbon emission rate associated with hydrogen usage by 29%.
William França, Petrobras Director of Industrial Processes and Products, stated that the achievement demonstrates that emission reductions depend not only on certified raw materials but also on continuous operational innovations to mitigate the impact of production inputs. This advancement aims to meet future regulatory requirements and expand the company's presence in renewable and low-carbon fuel markets.
