Petrobras sustainable fuel development
Overview
Petrobras has initiated research into using blockchain technology to track the sustainability of its low-carbon fuels. In collaboration with the Cardano Foundation and PUC-Rio, the company is testing applications to monitor Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel. These tools aim to prevent ‘double counting’ of environmental benefits and provide verifiable lifecycle histories for emissions reporting.
Following these research efforts, Petrobras reported a 23.8% reduction in the carbon intensity of its corn oil-derived SAF at the Duque de Caxias Refinery. This improvement, verified by an international audit and ISCC CORSIA certification renewal, was achieved through optimized hydrogen management during production. Director of Industrial Processes and Products William França noted that such progress relies on ‘continuous operational innovations to mitigate the impact of production inputs’ to meet regulatory requirements.
