Petrovietnam and Canada deepen energy partnership

Petrovietnam chief Le Manh Cuong met Canadian ambassador Jim Nickel in Hanoi to discuss expanding cooperation in liquefied natural gas (LNG), nuclear power and carbon capture and storage (CCS). Canada highlighted its emerging LNG exports to Asia, its expertise in nuclear technology and readiness to support Vietnam’s energy transition, while Petrovietnam outlined its shift from a traditional oil and gas group to an industrial and energy corporation.

Petrovietnam, which owns Vietnam’s first LNG import terminal and operates the Nhon Trach 3 and 4 LNG‑fired power plants, seeks Canadian involvement in building LNG import terminals, regasification facilities and gas distribution networks, as well as applying LNG cold energy in industry. The company also aims to partner with Canadian firms on nuclear regulatory frameworks, workforce development and supply‑chain localisation for the Ninh Thuan 2 nuclear plant. The meeting reflects a broader move by Vietnam and Canada to elevate bilateral relations across trade, science, technology and energy sectors.
