Vietnam‑Canada energy partnership expansion

In late July 2026, Vietnam deepened its strategic ties with Canada across the energy sector and broader high‑technology fields.

On 20 July, Petrovietnam chief Le Manh Cuong met Canadian Ambassador Jim Nickel in Hanoi. The talks centered on expanding cooperation in liquefied natural gas, nuclear power and carbon‑capture‑and‑storage, with Vietnam seeking Canadian expertise and investment to build LNG import terminals, regasification facilities and to support the Ninh Thuan 2 nuclear project.

A week later, on 27 July, Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung again met Ambassador Nickel, urging an upgrade of the Vietnam‑Canada Comprehensive Partnership. The agenda widened to include artificial intelligence, semiconductors, critical minerals, green and nuclear energy, security, defence and high‑skill talent exchange, calling for a concrete roadmap and more high‑level visits. The same day, Vice‑Premier Hồ Quốc Dũng met former U.S. Ambassador Marc Knapper to discuss U.S. investment and a five‑year development strategy, underscoring Vietnam’s broader push for foreign partnership.
