Peugeot launches 208 concept with steer‑by‑wire system and unveils 408 fastback

Peugeot unveiled a concept version of the new 208 that replaces the conventional round steering wheel with a square, steer‑by‑wire “Hypersquare” control. The electronic system requires only one full turn for maximum steering angle, adjusts steering ratio to speed and eliminates the mechanical link to the wheels. It is integrated with the i‑Cockpit and a projected 31‑inch micro‑LED windshield as part of the Polygon concept, which also features 3‑D‑printed seats and Goodyear SightLine tyres. The production‑ready 208 equipped with this system is expected to reach market next year, while the current model will remain available for customers who prefer a traditional wheel.

At the same time Peugeot introduced the 408 fastback, highlighted by a bold “flare green” paint and illuminated front and rear badges. The vehicle is offered with fully electric, plug‑in hybrid, mild‑hybrid and conventional petrol powertrains, the E‑408 delivering up to 213 hp and a WLTP range of 456 km. It measures 4.687 m long with a 2.787 m wheelbase, providing ample interior space and a 468‑liter boot. Inside, a digital 3‑D instrument cluster, i‑Cockpit ergonomics, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and advanced driver‑assist features are standard, while new functions such as 80 % charge reservation and battery pre‑heating are planned for later rollout.
