Peugeot shifts to hybrid mix and expands lineup by 2030
Overview
Peugeot has officially abandoned its 2021 commitment to transition to an exclusively electric lineup in Europe by 2030. Under the leadership of General Manager Alain Favey, the brand is pivoting to a balanced strategy that includes electric, hybrid, and internal combustion engine models to meet diverse consumer needs. This shift is part of a broader plan to increase annual sales from 1.1 million to 1.5 million vehicles by 2030.
The updated roadmap includes seven new or modernized models utilizing Stellantis technologies, such as the STLA One architecture and STLA Brain platform. Key upcoming releases include new electric generations of the 208 and 2008, alongside updated versions of the 308 and 408. The new E-208 is expected to serve as a technological showcase, potentially featuring steer-by-wire technology.
Recent updates have focused on refining the 408 and 308 models. The 408 SUV-coupé received a facelift featuring ‘three-claw’ daytime running lights, an illuminated logo, and a power increase to approximately 240 hp. Its plug-in hybrid version offers an electric range of roughly 70 km. The 308 hatchback has also been updated with improved driver ergonomics, including a 10-inch touchscreen with customizable ‘i-Toggles’ and the Drive Assist 2.0 package for adaptive cruise control.
Looking toward 2029 or 2030, Peugeot is exploring a new design direction for a future 308 model to compete with the SUV segment. This proposed model may utilize a fastback silhouette that blends elements of a coupe, an SUV, and a traditional five-door compact, targeting markets such as the Middle East, Africa, and Turkey.
Regarding performance branding, Favey indicated that while the revived GTi badge will remain exclusive to compact sports cars, a hybrid version remains a possibility. The electric e-208 GTi is intended to act as a “halo car” to enhance the brand’s sporting image.
