PFAS emissions under scrutiny in hydrogen technology

Research is underway to investigate potential PFAS (per- and polyfluoralkyl substances) emissions within hydrogen technologies, specifically regarding electrolyzers and proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. While PEM technology is the current industrial standard due to its unique material properties, the increasing expansion of hydrogen infrastructure is bringing environmental concerns and stricter regulations into focus.

PFAS, often referred to as ‘forever chemicals’ due to their extreme stability and inability to decompose in the environment, are widely used in various industries, including semiconductor manufacturing, automotive, and aerospace. Because these substances do not break down naturally, they accumulate in water, soil, air, and the food chain. The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has indicated that current regulations are insufficient and is advocating for bans to prevent further environmental and human health contamination.
