PFAS environmental risks rise amid regulatory shifts and new microplastic research

Global regulatory and environmental scrutiny regarding Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) is intensifying. Recent developments include the US government rolling back certain drinking water limits, UK lawmakers calling for restrictions on PFAS in cookware and uniforms, and Australia initiating legal action against 3M seeking over A$2 billion for environmental contamination.

Simultaneously, scientific research is uncovering new pathways for chemical exposure. A study from Nanjing University indicates that microplastics in soil can significantly alter how vegetables absorb these ‘forever chemicals.’ Specifically, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) exposure was found to increase PFAS accumulation in pak choi shoots by up to 1.70-fold by influencing plant physiological water transport. Conversely, tire wear particles were found to reduce accumulation in shoots by adsorbing the chemicals.

These combined trends highlight a growing challenge for manufacturers and regulators as they navigate diverging international policies, increasing litigation, and complex biological interactions between pollutants and the food supply.
