PFAS exposure linked to earlier menopause in study
A 2026 study involving nearly 5,000 women suggests a link between higher blood levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)—commonly known as ‘forever chemicals’—and earlier onset of menopause. Women with elevated levels of these chemicals reached menopause approximately one year earlier than those with lower levels.
PFAS are widely used in products such as tap water, nonstick cookware, makeup, clothing, and cleaning supplies. While the study does not prove direct causation, researchers note that these chemicals may interfere with hormonal signaling, potentially affecting the development of ovarian follicles and the production of estrogen and progesterone.
Medical experts warn that even a one-year shift in menopause can have significant long-term health implications. An earlier transition to a lower-estrogen state may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline, and osteoporosis. Additionally, PFAS exposure is independently associated with bone, brain, and heart health issues, which could compound the effects of earlier menopause.
