Pfizer Catania Plant Layoffs Prompt Council and Union Action

The municipal council of Catania, backed by local unions, approved a resolution urging protection of jobs at Pfizer’s plant after the company announced the closure of two production lines – pre‑filled syringes for oncology/rehumatology and penicillin – that could affect more than 300 direct employees and around 370 people including temporary staff and supply‑chain workers.

Union leaders from CGIL, CISL, UIL and UGL condemned the plan, calling for the return of production to Sicily and for the company to honor earlier promises not to abandon the site. They have asked the Sicilian regional assembly and the Ministry of Economic Development to intervene, seeking measures to avoid dismissals and even the possible sale of the facility. Mayor Enrico Trantino attended the council session, supporting the call for institutional accountability.
