Pfizer Catania plant: Three potential buyers identified
Three companies have expressed interest in acquiring the Pfizer pharmaceutical plant in Catania, Italy, following discussions at the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy. The Ministry and the Ministry of Labour intend to verify the reliability and feasibility of these potential buyers' plans, with a goal to define a reindustrialization plan by December.
Labor unions, including CGIL, CISL, UIL, and UGL, are calling for a structured reindustrialization process to protect the 540 workers at the site and prevent the loss of technical expertise. While Pfizer has contacted 70 potential buyers without success so far, the current interest from three entities offers a potential path forward.
To manage the transition, authorities are evaluating voluntary exit schemes and early retirement options (isopensione). Pfizer has clarified that its current collective redundancy procedures do not involve the Catania site, which is being treated as a separate matter. A follow-up meeting is scheduled for October 22 at the Ministry of Labour to discuss timelines and the feasibility of the offers.
