Pfizer Catania labor dispute and reindustrialization efforts

Overview

A labor dispute has emerged at the Pfizer-owned Wyeth Lederle plant in Catania, Italy, following a collective redundancy procedure initiated on July 2, 2026. The procedure involves 330 redundancies out of a 540-person workforce and includes a proposal to close two departments.

Negotiations regarding mitigation measures reached a stalemate among labor organizations. While unions including Filctem-Cgil, Femca-Cisl, Uiltec-Uil, and Ugl Chimici signed a proposal featuring early retirement, relocation, and exit incentives, the FIALC CISAL union refused to sign. Secretary Giuseppe La Mendola argued that the current procedure serves the company’s interests rather than the workers.

Efforts toward reindustrialization have gained momentum as three international pharmaceutical companies have expressed interest in acquiring the plant. Following a postponement of key meetings in late September, where unions requested a suspension of redundancy terms to evaluate alternatives, the Italian Ministry of Labour has extended the deadline for the industrial procedure to December 9. This extension, requested by major trade unions, aims to provide sufficient time to assess the industrial plans presented by the interested companies.

Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, stated the government aims to identify a path that revalues the facility and its workforce while ensuring uninterrupted production. The Ministry will oversee discussions with potential investors to determine if their proposals can lead to a concrete relaunch of the plant. Authorities continue to evaluate voluntary exit schemes and early retirement options as part of the transition.
