Pfizer to close Catania plant, 370 jobs lost

Pfizer announced it will permanently abandon its manufacturing site in Catania, Sicily, and plans to sell the facility with no intention of reconverting production. The decision was confirmed during a meeting of the Regional Assembly’s Third Commission on Production Activities, where the plant’s chief executive Giuseppe Campobasso participated remotely.

The company disclosed that 370 workers will be laid off, prompting a joint protest from several Italian unions (Ugl Chimici, Filctem CGIL, Femca CISL and Uiltec UIL). The unions condemned the move as a grave abandonment of social responsibility, warning that the closures threaten hundreds of families and could lead to further job cuts for remaining staff.
