Phú Quốc Airport Expansion Accelerates Ahead of APEC 2027

Sun Group is driving the expansion of Phú Quốc International Airport with a workforce of about 3,600 engineers, workers and supervisors operating around the clock. The T2 terminal concrete structure is 90‑100 % complete and the steel roof is slated for full installation by early July, with the entire roof expected by mid‑August. The VIP terminal is finished in its structural phase and the new runway 2 has been completed and opened for use on 16 April 2026. The project, covering 1,050 ha with an investment of more than VND 22 000 billion, is on an 18‑month construction schedule to be ready for the APEC Economic Cooperation Forum in 2027.

The airport works are part of 21 APEC‑related projects on the island, totalling over VND 137 100 billion. Challenges with land clearance, drainage and material supply have been largely addressed, with 70 % of the required land already cleared. “If the bottlenecks in land and drainage are not resolved soon, the APEC projects' timeline will be severely impacted,” said Nguyễn Tiến Hợp, director of Sun Group’s PPP projects. Contractors are adjusting methods—using sand instead of earth fill, deploying pumps to remove water, and installing temporary roofs—to keep the schedule despite the upcoming rainy season. The conference centre, exhibition hall and APEC theatre are also progressing, with about 2,200 staff on site and 90 % of concrete‑reinforced work completed.
