Tamsui pharmacist detained for allegedly drugging female student

A pharmacist in Tamsui, New Taipei City, has been detained after allegedly drugging a female university student who worked at his pharmacy. The suspect, identified by the surname Chen, reportedly placed benzodiazepines (BZD)—a class of controlled sedative drugs—into the student's water bottle. The victim reported experiencing dizziness, confusion, and memory loss after consuming the water.

Chen has admitted to the act but claimed he was merely “testing the efficacy of expired drugs” as a joke. However, prosecutors have charged him with several serious offenses, including using deception to cause the administration of a third-class narcotic, attempted aggravated sexual intercourse, and attempted aggravated sexual molestation. The Shilin District Court has ordered his detention in custody.

The Ministry of Health and Welfare stated that the incident involves violations of four major laws: the Pharmacist Act, the Pharmaceutical Affairs Act, the Controlled Drugs Management Act, and the Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act. The Ministry has directed the New Taipei City Health Bureau to conduct an on-site inspection next week. If the allegations are confirmed, the pharmacist faces severe disciplinary action, which could include the permanent revocation of his professional license.
