Philadelphia area infrastructure projects trigger major road and bridge closures

Major infrastructure projects in the Philadelphia region will cause significant traffic disruptions starting Monday, August 24.

In Philadelphia, the Market Street Bridge will close to vehicular traffic for approximately 14 months as part of a $150 million reconstruction project. The bridge, which spans the Schuylkill River, I-76, and regional rail lines, is expected to remain closed to drivers through October 2027. While the full multi-phase project extends to 2029, the bridge closure is a primary phase. SEPTA will detour six bus routes (31, 44, 49, 124, 125, and L1 Owl), though pedestrian and bicycle access will be maintained via a designated walkway. The project aims to include a new two-way concrete-separated bike lane.

In Delaware County, PennDOT has scheduled daytime road closures in Newtown and Haverford townships from August 24 through August 28. Newtown Street Road will be closed between Wyola Drive and St. Davids Road on August 24 and 25. Following this, College Avenue will be closed between Haverford Road and Darby Road from August 26 through August 28. Both projects involve base repairs, and local access will be maintained, though motorists are advised to expect delays.
