Philippine police deploy security for BARMM parliamentary elections

Security forces are mobilizing for the historic first-ever Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) parliamentary elections scheduled for September 14, 2026. The Police Regional Office XI has deployed 869 personnel, including 500 officers trained for the Special Electoral Board and 365 for peacekeeping duties, to secure key areas such as Maguindanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Norte, and Cotabato City.

In response to social media misinformation, the Independent Election Monitoring Center (IEMC) clarified that Turkish police will not be deployed to guard the elections. The IEMC noted that while Moro Islamic Liberation Front Chairman Ahod “Al Haj Murad” Ebrahim invited the Turkish Embassy to witness the polls, this is a diplomatic observer function rather than a law enforcement role. Election security remains the sole responsibility of Philippine authorities, including the Commission on Elections, the Armed Forces of the Philippines, and the Philippine National Police.
