BARMM prepares for historic first parliamentary elections
The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) is preparing for its first parliamentary elections, a historic event intended to determine control over 80 parliamentary seats. Approximately 2.393 million voters are expected to cast ballots across 5,212 precincts in 105 municipalities and two cities.
Security remains a primary concern, with 43 violent incidents reported since the election gun ban was implemented. The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) faces scrutiny regarding its internal divisions and the incomplete decommissioning of its fighters. To ensure order, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has deployed approximately 10,500 personnel, with PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. emphasizing the need for impartiality.
Additionally, the military has bolstered security efforts. The 10th Infantry Division has deployed two more battalions, bringing its total commitment to 1,444 personnel supported by 43 military trucks and eight wheeled armored vehicles. The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) reports that preparations are roughly 95% complete.
