Philippine Senate shooting follows ICC arrest warrant for Senator Ronald dela Rosa

Armed soldiers entered the Senate building in Manila and witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots – AFP said at least five shots were heard, while Reuters counted more than ten. No injuries have been confirmed.

The incident occurs just after the International Criminal Court released an arrest warrant for Senator Ronald dela Rosa, the former national police chief accused of crimes against humanity for his role in the 2016‑2018 drug‑war campaign of ex‑President Rodrigo Duterte. Dela Rosa, who is under Senate protection, had earlier urged the armed forces to block any attempt to arrest him and to prevent his extradition to the Netherlands. Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano said the Senate would allow an arrest only if the case were tried in Philippine courts.
