Philippines 7.8 quake lifts seafloor, reshapes coastlines and triggers nationwide relief

A magnitude‑7.8 earthquake struck the southern Philippines on 8 June, producing a rare geological event that raised the ocean floor by up to two metres in parts of the Cotabato and Sarangani coastlines. The uplift caused the shoreline to retreat by as much as 200 metres, exposing coral reefs and marine grass beds, which began to die off en masse. Authorities reported at least 61 deaths and 40 people still missing.

The disaster prompted a swift response: the Department of Social Welfare and Development deployed rapid‑response teams, while the Cebu archdiocese organised direct aid for affected communities. Damage assessments revealed severe losses, including an estimated 870 million‑peso ($15 million) damage bill to Mindanao State University in General Santos. Officials warned of ongoing environmental and infrastructure challenges as recovery efforts continue.
