Philippines braces for heavy rains as Maymay weakens and Dolphin fuels southwest monsoon

Tropical Depression Maymay, the Philippines' 13th tropical cyclone of 2026, weakened into a low‑pressure area on Friday and is expected to be absorbed into the circulation of Typhoon Dolphin. While Dolphin remains outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility and is moving toward mainland China, it is intensifying the southwest monsoon (habagat), bringing widespread rainfall to western Luzon and the Visayas.

The weather bureau PAGASA warned of heavy rain in Zambales, Bataan and Occidental Mindoro, with expected accumulations of 100‑200 mm in 24 hours, and orange‑level warnings for Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Abra, Benguet, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Metro Manila, Cavite, Batangas and Antique. Floods and landslides have already been reported in northern and central Luzon as Maymay passed, but wind signals have been lowered as the system moved away.
