Philippines monsoon rains affect 380,000 people and cause fatalities

An enhanced southwest monsoon (Habagat), intensified by tropical cyclones Luis and Maymay, has caused widespread flooding and landslides across the Philippines, affecting over 380,000 people across eight regions.

As of August 9, 2026, official reports confirmed at least six fatalities resulting from landslides, rockslides, drowning, and electrocution. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported that 148 houses were damaged, with 10 completely destroyed. Significant flooding has been reported in Metro Manila, Luzon, and the Visayas, with waist-deep water in parts of Quezon City and impassable roads in Pasig City.

In response to the weather conditions, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered government agencies to remain on heightened alert. Local government units and academic institutions have declared mass class suspensions for Monday, August 10, across various provinces including Abra, Batangas, Bulacan, Cavite, and parts of Metro Manila. In Baguio City, landslides have disrupted travel and left several people missing.

To assist displaced residents, the SM Group has opened several shopping malls in Metro Manila as temporary shelters, providing free Wi-Fi, restrooms, and charging stations. Authorities continue to monitor rising water levels in dams and reservoirs to manage downstream flooding.
