Philippines death toll climbs to 46 after 7.8‑magnitude Mindanao quake

A 7.8‑magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Mindanao in the southern Philippines on June 8, causing widespread destruction, building collapses, landslides and tsunami warnings. The death toll has risen to 46, with injuries approaching 500 and more than 32,000 residents placed in evacuation shelters. Rescue teams continue searching for survivors amid aftershocks; the number of missing persons has increased to 17.

The hardest‑hit areas include General Santos City, Davao Occidental and Sarangani, where landslides buried homes and collapsed structures. Authorities have inspected roughly 2,500 homes and over 100 government buildings. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has deployed disaster‑response teams, and international partners such as the United States, Japan, France and New Zealand have offered assistance. Schools and the General Santos airport remain closed while safety checks and humanitarian operations proceed.
