Philippines earthquake kills at least 15 amid storm landslides

A magnitude 5.4 earthquake was recorded off the Philippines at a depth of 35 km, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre. No immediate injuries or damage were reported from the quake itself. The country, already grappling with heavy rainfall from a strong storm, suffered deadly landslides in its southern region that killed at least 15 people.

The Philippines lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, making it one of the most seismically active nations. In recent weeks the archipelago has experienced several strong tremors, including a 5.8‑magnitude quake near Mindanao in early July and a 6.5‑magnitude event in late June, but the latest quake added to the mounting humanitarian strain caused by the ongoing storm and associated flooding.
