Mindanao Earthquake Kills Over 60, Displaces Tens of Thousands in the Philippines

A magnitude‑7.8 earthquake struck off the southern coast of Mindanao on 8 June 2026, later confirmed by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. The quake caused at least 61 deaths, more than 1,400 injuries and left 40 people missing. Official counts indicate that between 32,000 and 45,000 residents have been displaced, with roughly 173,000 families affected across the region.

Widespread damage includes the collapse of commercial buildings, schools and homes in General Santos City and surrounding areas. Over 19,000 houses were damaged, 8,642 schools across six regions were impacted, and critical infrastructure such as roads, bridges, an airport and two seaports suffered damage. Landslides in the mountainous town of Glan claimed additional lives. A brief tsunami warning was issued, with waves of up to 1.4 metres observed; Indonesia recorded a 75‑centimetre surge on the nearby Sangihe Islands.

Rescue and relief operations involve the Philippines Office of Civil Defence, the Coast Guard, Red Cross teams and international aid agencies. Commodore Noemie Cayabyab said, “Most of the buildings are heavily devastated, there are so many collapsed buildings.” A regional disaster‑management coordinator warned, “The physical destruction is only the beginning. We are currently facing a dual crisis: a medical emergency in the field and a massive logistical challenge in restoring basic utilities to thousands of displaced families.”
