Philippines earthquake leaves at least 41 dead and over 450 injured

A magnitude‑7.8 earthquake struck offshore Mindanao in the southern Philippines on June 8, 2026. The quake caused buildings to collapse in the Soccksargen region and Davao Occidental, killing at least 41 people and injuring more than 450. Thousands were displaced as homes were reduced to rubble and emergency tents were set up for victims.

Philippine authorities issued a brief tsunami warning for coastal areas of the Philippines, Indonesia, Palau, Taiwan and Papua New Guinea, which was lifted a few hours later. President Ferdinand Marcos ordered the suspension of classes in the affected provinces and urged residents to move to higher ground. Aftershocks continued, with one reaching magnitude 6.5, further hampering rescue efforts and damage assessments.
