Philippines expands fruit exports to Canada with mango, durian shipments
The Philippines has launched several commercial shipments of tropical fruits to Canada, including durian, mangosteen, and Carabao mangoes. These shipments are part of a government initiative to expand agricultural export markets and address a significant agricultural trade deficit.
Trial shipments of durian and mangosteen are being sent to Vancouver and Toronto for Canadian buyer Fresh Makers Ltd. Additionally, the first commercial shipment of one metric ton of Carabao mangoes has arrived in Vancouver. The mango export was facilitated through a partnership between Mensch FilAm Corp. and the Department of Trade and Industry’s Export Marketing Bureau.
Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. stated that these efforts follow directives to find new destinations for Philippine farm products to bolster rural development and increase farm incomes. The Department of Agriculture is also working to consolidate mango growers into a single federation and strengthen plant health measures to meet international export requirements.
