Taiwan Reaffirms Claim on Scarborough Shoal After Philippines Files UN Chart
Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated its sovereignty claim over the islands of the South China Sea, specifically Scarborough Shoal (known as Democracy Reef in Taiwan), following the Philippines’ submission of an official nautical chart of the atoll to the United Nations. The Philippines filed the chart under Article 16 of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) to formalise its maritime boundaries and reinforce its territorial claim, which it calls Bajo de Masinloc. Taiwan called for the dispute to be resolved peacefully under international law and urged its inclusion in multilateral settlement mechanisms. China condemned the Philippine filing, describing it as illegal, null and void, and a grave infringement of China’s sovereign rights over the shoal, which it refers to as Huangyan Dao and asserts as inherent territory.
The three parties—Taiwan, the Philippines and China—continue to contest the same feature, each using different names and legal arguments to support their claims, while the United Nations serves as the venue for the Philippines’ latest diplomatic move.
