Philippines grapples with over 1,100 aftershocks after Mindanao's 7.8 quake

More than 1,100 aftershocks have rattled Mindanao since the magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Sarangani on June 8, with magnitudes ranging from 1.3 to 6.7. The main shock caused at least 41 deaths, over 450 injuries, and extensive damage in General Santos City, where dozens of buildings collapsed and power, communications and transport networks were disrupted. Residents were moved to temporary shelters and tents, and police deployed over 2,000 officers to assist rescue and relocation efforts.

A magnitude‑5.1 aftershock hit Sarangani on June 8 at 5:13 p.m., with intensities felt across General Santos and surrounding municipalities. Phivolcs said no additional damage was expected, but warned that further tremors could occur. The tsunami warning issued after the main quake was later cancelled. Humanitarian agencies, including the Philippine Red Cross and the Inquirer Foundation, have launched appeals for food, clean water and medical aid for the affected families.
