Philippines hit by deadly 7.8 magnitude earthquake, dozens killed and hundreds injured

On June 8, 2026 a magnitude 7.8 offshore earthquake struck the southern Philippines near Mindanao, causing widespread devastation. Official counts reported at least 32 deaths and more than 200 injuries, while later updates raised the confirmed death toll to over 40, including victims of landslides in Sarangani province. The quake collapsed buildings in General Santos, Davao del Sur and other towns, left dozens missing, and triggered a one‑metre tsunami that damaged a coastal village.

Infrastructure was heavily affected: the international airport in General Santos was temporarily closed, 17 domestic flights were canceled, and power outages impacted hundreds of thousands of households.
