Philippines hit by magnitude 8.2 earthquake on Mindanao, tsunami warnings issued

A powerful earthquake struck the southern Philippine island of Mindanao on 8 June, with magnitudes reported between 7.8 and 8.2 by several seismic agencies. The shallow quake, centred about 25‑30 km off the coast of Sarangani province at a depth of roughly 35‑55 km, is the strongest recorded in the country since 1990. Local authorities issued a tsunami alert, warning of waves up to three metres along the Philippine coast and smaller surges for nearby Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan and Japan.

The Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr ordered the suspension of classes in affected areas and directed disaster‑relief agencies to coordinate aid and evacuation centres. Airport operations at General Santos were temporarily halted. Police reports indicated at least eight fatalities and damage to several buildings, while officials in Indonesia and Japan advised evacuations in coastal zones. No major casualties were reported by Philippine officials at the time of the statements.
