Philippines implements public transport fare hikes
The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has implemented fare increases for various public utility vehicles (PUVs) in the Philippines. The adjustments affect traditional and modern jeepneys, city and provincial buses, point-to-point services, Transport Network Vehicle Services (TNVS), airport taxis, and UV Express units.
Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez stated that the adjustments are necessary to ensure public transport availability, noting that existing fare structures are inadequate for drivers and operators due to the ongoing fuel crisis. The Department of Transportation (DOTr) noted that the move responds to high operating costs faced by transport operators.
Specific changes include: - Traditional jeepneys: Base fare increased to PHP 14 for the first 4km. - Modern jeepneys: Base fare increased to PHP 17 for the first 4km. - City buses (ordinary): Base fare increased to PHP 15 for the first 5km. - TNVS: Booking rates for sedans, hatchbacks, and SUVs have seen significant increases.
Mandatory 20-percent fare discounts for students, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities must still be applied to all PUVs.
