Philippines public transport fare increases
Overview
The Philippine Department of Transportation (DOTr) lifted a suspension on public utility vehicle (PUV) fare adjustments to assist operators with rising operational costs.
Following the lifting of the suspension, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) implemented the increases across various transport sectors, including traditional and modernized jeepneys, buses, UV Express, taxis, and Transport Network Vehicle Services (TNVS). Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez stated the adjustments were necessary to ensure transport availability, citing that existing structures were inadequate due to an “ongoing fuel crisis.”
Specific adjustments include increasing the minimum fare for traditional jeepneys to ₱14 and modernized jeepneys to ₱17 for the first four kilometers. Authorities have mandated that the statutory 20% discount for students, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities remains applicable.
