Philippines' Marcos orders emergency response after 7.8 Mindanao quake

A magnitude‑7.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Sarangani in Mindanao, Philippines, on 8 June 2026 at 07:37 local time. The epicenter was located about 125 km northeast of Sarangani, with depth estimates ranging from 10 to 35 km. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. directed all relevant agencies to act immediately, suspending classes in the affected areas until further notice and ordering the Department of Social Welfare and Development to pre‑position relief goods and ready evacuation centres.
