Philippines Mindanao 7.8‑magnitude quake kills 35, injures 134

A 7.8‑magnitude earthquake struck the southern Philippines on June 8, 2026, with its epicenter off the coast of Mindanao’s Sarangani province, about 24 km offshore. The quake caused widespread building collapse, including a school in Davao del Sur where witnesses shouted, “Κύριε, κατέρρευσε στα αλήθεια! Πραγματικά κατέρρευσε!” The Disaster Management Authority reported at least 35 deaths, 134 injuries and about 12 people still missing.

More than 200 aftershocks were recorded, nine of them strong, and a landslide in the Glan community killed 14 additional residents. Authorities ordered evacuation of coastal areas to higher ground, suspended school classes in affected districts and halted operations at General Santos Airport. Rescue teams continued searching the ruins of a supermarket and other structures for trapped victims.
