Philippines Mindanao Earthquake Kills at Least Eight, Triggers Tsunami Alerts

A magnitude‑7.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Mindanao in the southern Philippines on June 8, 2026. Initial reports confirmed at least eight fatalities and several injuries as buildings and homes collapsed in General Santos City and surrounding areas.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered emergency agencies, including the Office of Civil Defense and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, to mobilise rescue efforts, provide relief supplies, and suspend school classes in the affected zones. Police sergeant‑major Robert Dagon reported extensive structural damage and ongoing rescue operations.

The quake prompted tsunami warnings across the region. The Philippine seismological institute recorded waves up to 1.4 m, while Indonesia issued precautionary evacuations and Japan and the U.S. Pacific tsunami warning centres issued alerts for their coastal waters. Subsequent updates lowered the estimated magnitude to 7.8, confirming the quake’s depth at about 35 km.
